LAG Consortium Chairman Visit to Ucraine

On 25-26 October 2018, Dimitri Zviadadze, Chairman of Consortium Legal Aid Georgia (LAG) participated as a guest-speaker in the Forum “Efficient Local Government as a Background of Democratic and Rule-of-Law State” which was held in Kramatorsk, Donetsk oblast, Ukraine. The Forum was organized by Donetsk and Luhansk Oblast State Administrations, Parliamentary Committee on State Building, Regional Policy and Local Self-Government, and the Ministry of Regional Development of Ukraine with the support of the Council of Europe.

More than 200 people participated in the event, including members of the Parliament of Ukraine, representatives of central and local executive bodies, local self-government authorities and their associations, experts and academics, international partners.

The Forum included seven panel discussions on the following topics:
Local self-government development; Legislative regulation in the area of local self-government; Strategic planning as an instrument of the new regional policy; Co-operation in addressing IDPs issues: authorities – business – community; Information space: public broadcasting and community media; Children – community’s future; Community safety instruments: financial mechanisms, state emergency service, national police, national minorities issues.

Field Visit to Kutaisi IDP Settlment

On September 18, 2018 Consortium Legal Aid Georgia (LAG) organized field visit to multi-store building at #112 Agmashenebeli avenue in Kutaisi where, together with locals, IDPs are resettled and workshop with the representatives of the state Legal Aid Service (LAS).

During field visit, there was a meeting organized with IDPs living in the building and who are resettled there in the frame of the “durable housing” program.  The visit was attended by the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). IDPs informed about the issues they face in the building, particularly about non-functioning elevator which creates a lot of obstacles for resident’s movement in multi-store building.

The field visit and workshop were organized in the frame of the “Free Legal Aid for IDPs in Georgia” project implemented with financial support from the United National High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Workshops for the representatives of the Community Based Organizations (CBOs)

On August 29-30, 2018 Consortium Legal Aid Georgia (LAG) organized workshops for the representatives of the Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in Tbilisi and Kutaisi. The workshops were participated by the CBOs operating in Rustavi, Gardabani, Tskaltubo and Kopitnari IDP settlements and by the representatives of the international organization “Save the Children”.    

In the course of the workshops participants discussed activities implemented by LAG within above mentioned IDP settlements during last year as well as future plans. By the end of the workshops the parties signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) based on which these CBOs and LAG will continue cooperation in the future. 

The workshops were organized in the frame of the “Supporting Human Rights and Protection of Internally Displaced People in Georgia” project implemented in partnership with Save the Children with financial support from the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (BPRM).

Workshop of Practitioner Lawyers

On 25th of June, 2018, Consortium Legal Aid Georgia (LAG) organized a meeting with State Legal Aid Service (LAS) in Kutaisi. During the workshop the practitioner lawyers from both agencies exchanged information and experience of working on legal cases of internally displaced persons (IDPs). The parties discussed the issue of future cooperation, in particular, joint mobile visits planned and organized in IDP settlements.

The meeting was organized in the framework of the “Free Legal Aid for IDPs in Georgia” project funded by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
